O Emmy chegou na sua 72ª edição em 2020. Por conta da pandemia do coronavírus (COVID-19), a cerimônia apostou em um formato virtual.
Nesse novo formato de cerimônia, que os fãs esperam que aconteça apenas em 2020, a HBO levou melhor que as plataformas de streaming. No geral, a Netflix liderava a premiação com 160 indicações.
Porém, no fim da noite, produções da emissora, como Succession e Watchmen, levaram a melhor nas principais categorias. Outro destaque foi a comédia Schitt’s Creek.
A série venceu as 7 categorias em que estava indicada. Entre elas, a de melhor ator de comédia, com Eugene Levy, e de melhor atriz, tendo Catherine O’Hara.
Já na categoria de drama e também na de minissérie, Succession e Watchmen foram os destaques. As séries conseguiram 4 prêmios cada.
Já a surpresa da noite ficou com Zendaya, de Euphoria – também da HBO. A atriz superou Olivia Colman, de The Crown, e Jennifer Aniston, de The Morning Show, para ficar com o prêmio de melhor atriz em drama.
